Heroworship: A Graphic Tale of Epic Proportions August 6 - September 18. 2010

Edward Lightner

Edward Lightner, Fizeau Plumbbob 11 kt #1, 11.75” x 18”.

The nuclear issue exists for me as both the hero and the villain (anti-hero if you will) at the same time. It is for the West the thing which keeps us safe from the “other” groups; thus something which guarantees total destruction simultaneously provides life. The bomb becomes the hero in a world where a nuclear device should only survive as the anti-hero. Although not actually related in the real world, AIDs/HIV medications exist in my mind in something of the same way. Thus the subject becomes visually interchangeable with atomic imagery. The medications are the hero to the virus’ anti-hero. Yet one does not live without the other. Reminiscent of the relationship between Batman and the Joker, in that in that one can not exist without the other, and in fact each informs the other. The dividing line between the two, the hero and the anti-hero, is always in a state of flux.
