Jeff Whipple
The Perpetual Spasm
May 5 – 31, 2007
The 3-marks motif in Jeff Whipple’s artwork symbolizes the “spasm” of life. Using a variety of media, Whipple expresses ideas about the beauty and wonder of our brief spasm in eternity. The new work follows the themes of Whipple’s successful installation during Art Basel Miami Beach in December. “The Spasm Between the Infinities” was commissioned by the Tampa Museum of Art. It was a large-scale video projection above the entrance of a hotel in Miami Beach along with an exhibition of 32 artworks inside the hotel. This will be Jeff Whipple’s 74 th solo exhibition and his 25 th in the Tampa Bay area. Last year Whipple won his third Florida artist fellowship. He has also won two state fellowships in Illinois and in 2001 he was the first recipient of the $10,000 Fulton Ross Award for Artists. He has been commissioned to create several large-scale public artworks including a 75-foot long video projection on the façade of the Tampa Museum of Art, a 300-foot long mural for the City of Tampa and a 150-foot long mural for the Johnson Library in St. Petersburg. Whipple received a MFA from the University of South Florida in 1980. He has taught at several colleges including Arizona State University and Northern Illinois University. He currently teaches at the University of Tampa.
