Spirituality and Materialism

November 3 - 24, 2007

Opening Reception Saturday November 3, 2007 6-9 PM

I chose to exhibit "Topanga Canyon Altar" in the Emerson’s Spirituality and Materialism show because it visually embraces the Christian dilemma between things of the spirit and those of the flesh; incorporates myths of East Asia as seen in the Chinese silk tapestry and in the presence of Fukurokujo, the Japanese god of long life (who by the way, was cheerfully addicted to wine). Mary presiding from atop her shrine encompasses this juxtaposition. Mary, after all, is a woman of paradox and complexity. Human, she beckons us; divinely chosen she envelops us in her mystery. Her life is touched equally by the commonplace and miraculous; by joy and sorrow. Finally, the paintings suggests that Oriental and Western doctrines are talking about the same spiritual reality but in a completely different way, involving a point of view and a kind of realization that might be essential to human sanity. The inspiration for the painting came from a funky antique and curio store in Topanga Canyon ( Southern California) – one of those lost-in-time places where the proprietor creates tableaus of various—seemingly disparate—items in his shop. In a small candlelit room was this diorama: my Topanga Canyon Altar.
