We live in a society where personal worth is weighed out by fiscal measures.
Work that is unpaid, or poorly paid, is seen as degrading, regardless of the intrinsic rewards or societal benefit. Women, particularly, must find their own personal balance between "having and being".
The demands of children, home, and the external work environment contribute to physical fatigue and emotional ambivalence. Spiritualism aids in the pursuit of self: the ability to grow and maintain a source of strength inside yourself. This strength must come from within and be independent of any other relationships.
My new piece, Girl Marks, is a visual statement of the mark, the strength, that women must make for themselves: not for their partner, not for their family, not for their employer, but for themselves.
