MK Foltz

The editor of Photo-Art magazine in Korea is fascinated by the American pampering of dogs since dogs for all of Asia are a menu item.

When Koreans view this piece in Photo-Art magazine they will probably question how in the world could Americans be so foolish.

Culture-shots (artist statement):

Nineteenth century Romanticism experienced the sublime in the power and vastness of nature.  Our new sublime is technology, whose globalized variations are present everywhere. Photographic technologies, too, have everywhere cross-bred aesthetically with other media, constituting a kind of visual DNA, while at the same time retaining a documentary anchor in reality. Technological consciousness has thus eclipsed the traditional mytho-poetic vision of pre-modern sensibilities.

Culture-shots employs digital technologies to contextualize my own photographs in ways that tease new meanings from Western cultural traditions, and those of others, by juxtaposing them with images drawn from our current technological consciousness. This work focuses on setting up an interplay that is intended to stimulate an awareness of the inner realities that once characterized the pre-modern.
