SpiritualityCambodia
Within the thick walls of the sacred temples of Angkor Wat, Cambodians
adorn their beloved icons with brightly colored fabrics. Incense is lit
and offerings left. This stone figure is painted as a manifestation of
the spirit that not only went into creating it, but of the spirit that
defines Cambodians.
Multiple arms arise like wings while the gaze is pointed downward in
sorrow. Despite bearing witness to the mass extermination of a third of
the Khmer population and the continued struggle towards recovery, the
figure stands solid with resilience.
MaterialismDeath of the Forests
Our current lifestyle is having an enormous impact on Rocky Mountain
forests; they are dying on a massive scale. In just the last few years,
the beetle kill epidemic has cloaked the hillsides with the rust color of
dead trees, killing 80% of Colorado pines. It is a manifestation of
global warming as our winters haven’t been cold enough to keep the pine
beetle in check.
The scale of these changes will be manifested around the world in various
ways as we spur on extreme climate changes wrought by global warming. We
need to start addressing the materialist aspects of the way we live if we
are to evolve fast enough to keep pace with the changes.
