I have always thought of materialism is just amassing “things”. Perhaps to show how much money you have. Some people buy expensive things and then polish them up for everyone to see. Soon all of those possessions will become moot, and people will just start polishing their money: Big, Shiny Money for the world to see. “Look how much shinier my money is than yours.”
