When I think of tea, I imagine queens, geishas and old women, prim and proper. I think of tea as calm and orderly, associated with rituals and constraints. But I also think of women gathering, fluid conversation, riotous laughter.

With “Tea,” I wanted to deconstruct that notion of rigidity and ritualism. Instead, I’m attempting to capture the joy and absurdity; the warmth and excitement of gathering with friends on a cold winter’s day to share a pot of tea as my roommates and I used to do in Washington, D.C., the year following our college graduation. There was an element of the ridiculous in the swirling conversations that floated up into the atmosphere along with the steam from our cups. Tea can mean renewal, bonding, and can serve as the uniting thread that spurs friendships and hilarity.
